Breaking Boundaries and Finding Freedom

Participants in our Prison Electronic Music Program honing their skills on Ableton

In a world where incarceration often feels like a dead end, Give a Beat’s Prison Electronic Music Program is breaking boundaries and offering a glimmer of hope to incarcerated individuals. Through this innovative initiative, individuals like DJ Velocity are finding solace, self-expression, and personal growth through the transformative power of music.

DJ Velocity’s journey is a testament to the profound impact that our Prison Electronic Music Program can have on individuals. As a talented graduate of the program, he recently shared his experience, expressing his gratitude towards Give a Beat.

He highlighted the positive environment created by the program, stating, “When I come to this class, it doesn’t really feel like prison. I feel free to be myself and learn and grow, and I can tell you guys really care.”

A Journey of Personal Growth and Transformation

For DJ Velocity, participating in our program was not just about attending a music class; it was an opportunity for personal growth and transformation. Our Prison Electronic Music Program’s impact reaches beyond self-expression; it fosters creativity and exploration among its participants. From production to DJing, these individuals are pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds.

Our Teaching Artist, Esseance, mentioned to us that participants are developing communication skills and creative abilities. In addition to its music-focused elements, our program provides participants with valuable, transferable life skills. Our opening and closing circle is thoughtfully designed to create a nurturing space where each individual can freely express their thoughts and feelings. Through this process, we instill essential traits of active communication and active listening, empowering our participants to grow both within the program and in their personal lives.

The Prison Electronic Music Program Graduation

To celebrate our participants achievements, Give a Beat recently held a graduation party where DJ Velocity showcased his skills on a makeshift stage. With smooth transitions between tracks he produced himself, DJ Velocity left everyone impressed. Reflecting on his experience, he expressed his gratitude for the positive energy of the program, saying, “I had so much fun up there today. I really thank you guys for your positive energy; you make us feel like we can be ourselves.”

DJ Velocity’s impact story perfectly captures the essence of what Give a Beat strives to create through our Prison Electronic Music Program - a safe space where individuals can truly be themselves. Our program believes in the power of music to uplift, inspire, and heal. His words affirm the mission of Give a Beat and serve as a reminder of the profound impact that this program has on the lives of its participants.

A Supportive Community Built on Inclusion and Diversity

Our Prison Electronic Music Program delivers a multifaceted approach to cultivate positive social groups. Recognizing the typical divisions within prison environments, we prioritize collaboration through our 'artist supporting artist' mantra. By creating a safe and open space among individuals from diverse backgrounds, we witness the profound impacts of inclusionary practices unfold.

Through the program, DJ Velocity gained patience, made meaningful connections, and became part of a supportive community. He emphasized, “Being part of a supportive community is pretty cool.”

Our program passionately strives to dismantle racial barriers while fostering genuine camaraderie among participants. This helps with relationship building while also enhancing the overall well-being of each person. It's heartwarming to witness how peers confidently exchange greetings in the yard, reflecting the positive influence of our impact in the community.

DJ Velocity’s journey is just one example of the many personal growth stories that have emerged through our Prison Electronic Music Program. Many others have found solace, empowerment, and a sense of purpose within this program. Give a Beat’s commitment to providing a transformative experience through music continues to inspire and uplift incarcerated individuals, showing them that there is hope and a brighter future beyond the prison walls.
