Rhythm Becomes a Route to Redemption as 50+ Individuals Graduate from Give a Beat’s Prison Program

In the realm of correctional facilities, a distinctive process of transformation is underway, exemplified by the convergence of electronic music and incarcerated individuals. In July 2023, noteworthy graduation ceremonies were observed within several prisons, commemorating an unconventional accomplishment of over 50 individuals—the result of integrating electronic music with the prison environment. The Prison Electronic Music Program emerged as a beacon of hope and rehabilitation, highlighting the potential of music to transcend barriers, facilitate cognitive shifts, and reshape the futures of incarcerated individuals.

Music’s Uniting Force at California State Prison

Music possesses a unique and universal ability to bridge divides and foster unity among people. Through its emotive melodies and rhythmic harmonies, music has an innate capacity to resonate with shared human experience, evoking emotions and memories that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries. We’ve all felt it, and our participants in California State Prison have too.

Graduate DJ RitmoLatino stated, "I'm so happy. This has been a very important class for me to experience. This class proves music breaks barriers between humans and helps to grow empathy for one another."

By adopting an "artist supporting artist” mantra, Give a Beat creates an environment where participants collaborate and uplift one another, fostering a sense of camaraderie that extends beyond the musical realm in the Prison Electronic Music Program. The program's innovative approach is evident in its use of tactics like the opening and closing circle, where participants come together to share their experiences, aspirations, and progress. This communal ritual not only amplifies the sense of belonging but also facilitates a space for emotional expression and mutual understanding.

Another participant’s perspective highlights the unexpected power of music as a unifying force. Sal expressed, "I'm most surprised by how easy it is for music to bring people together. This class is awesome. I'm definitely getting a DJ board when I get out." Not only does the program forge a sense of community, but also serves as a wellspring of inspiration, uniting individuals from various backgrounds with a shared sense of purpose

Another graduate, DJ La Luz, reflects on an experience that defies his expectations of prison life. Initially confronted with the curriculum, doubt clouded his confidence in mastering the new technology. Yet, through unwavering commitment during practice sessions and the camaraderie of his peers, a transformation transpired. DJ La Luz experienced a surge in self-assurance, remarking, “I can do this, I’m feeling really happy.” On graduation day, he reflected on the entire journey by expressing, "I never imagined I'd have this kind of experience inside. This was an amazing experience I'll always cherish and remember."

His sentiment echoes the program's ability to transcend the limitations of the correctional environment, offering participants a profound and lasting connection to creativity, camaraderie, and personal growth. Collectively, these voices speak to the program's capacity to inspire transformation and hope in the midst of adversity.

The Dynamics of Harmony at the California Correctional Institution

Within the California Correctional Institution (CCI), a significant transformation unfolded. The graduation event was marked by an energetic atmosphere, reflecting the enthusiasm that had characterized each phase of the program. Demonstrating the program’s influence, several participants enrolled based on endorsements from former graduates. As participants demonstrated their acquired musical skills in front of the class, the environment resonated with excitement and pride, standing as a testament to persistent effort and determination. Notably, the impact extended beyond musical competence; it was defined by narratives of personal growth and revitalization.

One participant conveyed, "Music is spiritual to me. Music keeps me right. I'm going to cherish this class because when you get things taken away from you, it makes you appreciate what you have more." Experiencing a slice of humanity holds deep significance within the confines of incarceration. Frequently, our participants have been deprived of the experience of music, including their favorite compositions, for an extended period. Having access to the tools and resources necessary to impart a personal creative touch to music grants individuals a sense of agency.

Beyond having the creative freedom to explore music, countless participants expressed their joy for being in this environment. As one participant shared, "I'm so thankful for this class. I feel like those cell walls just crumble when I'm in here. I feel free." Participants in the program share a feeling of freedom, recognizing how music can have a powerful impact and create a more humane environment. Even in the confines of incarceration, music brings comfort, helps pave the path towards liberation, and rhythm becomes a route to redemption.

Celebrating Achievements and Empowering Lives at California Rehabilitation Center

Through the journey of the Prison Electronic Music Program at the California Rehabilitation Center (CRC), the participants find solace and inspiration, echoing the sentiments of DJ Rousch, who reflects, "I always end up leaving here with a smile... hours and days later, I'll just break out into a smile thinking about this class." The program not only brings healing to their lives but also instills a sense of hope and inspiration that endures long after each session. It becomes a much-needed respite from the rigors of their daily routines, as DJ Doc Whirl aptly notes, "this is a great break from what we typically go through." This brief interlude offers participants a chance to recharge and find solace through the healing power of music.

Moreover, our Prison Electronic Music Program acts as a catalyst for personal growth and accomplishment. DJ Makin Money's sentiments encapsulate the profound impact, as he shares, "I am really excited about my certificate... I've been down for 9 years. This is my first certificate. I really can't believe I finished a class. This class is dope, for sure." The program provides more than just musical education; it bestows a sense of achievement that boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. For individuals who have faced challenges and barriers, the attainment of a certificate becomes a tangible representation of progress and a source of renewed self-belief. In these ways, the program becomes a vessel for personal transformation and empowerment.

A Prelude to Harmonious Prospects

Our distinguished six-week program is made possible through our collaboration with Arts in Corrections, a program in partnership with the California Arts Council and CDCR. The Prison Electronic Music Program holds a direct impact on a yearly basis of over 280 incarcerated individuals. Given the widespread problem of mass incarceration in the United States, the program aims to tackle the dire need for rehabilitation initiatives. The graduation ceremonies of July 2023 surpassed their categorical significance, resonating as indicators of transformation and hope. The graduates carried with them not merely certificates, but a rekindled conviction in music's power to transcend mental barriers, deconstruct confinement, and recalibrate life trajectories. This was more than an ordinary graduation—it served as a prologue to a future characterized by harmony, redemption, and the boundless capabilities of the human spirit.

Collectively, we have the power to forge a path towards reshaping participants' futures by connecting them with the tools they need to prosper.
