Girls Rock Detroit
Girls Rock Detroit is an annual summer camp for female-identifying youth ages 8 to 16 in the city of Detroit, Michigan. Through the course of the week, the campers, many of whom have no formal musical experience, will receive instrument instruction, form bands and write their own original songs. At the end of the week, the bands will perform their original songs at a real rock and roll venue for their friends and families! Camp week is a safe, positive space filled with supportive role-models. Campers are mentored in an all-female environment filled with seasoned musicians, educators and activists.
The Girls Rock organization believes that young women are less encouraged and receive less opportunities to play music growing up than their male counterparts. We are certain that giving young women this opportunity to express themselves will foster positive self-esteem and confidence in all facets of their lives, empower them to challenge preconceived notions of what they can and cannot become and create engaged future members of our communities.
