Storyteller and self-proclaimed “song-slinger,” Zoe Boekbinder loves musical collaboration, so much so that she’s worked with everyone from Amanda Palmer to Spoon Jackson (link to http://realnessnetwork.blogspot.ca), a California State prisoner serving life without parole. Her latest endeavor, the Prison Music Project, tells the stories of 9 incarcerated men she worked with at New Folsom Prison, through their own lyrics & sounds, with all proceeds going towards programs supporting people reentering society after release from prison or jail. Produced by Ani DiFranco, the project is already getting some attention (link to www.prisonmusicproject.com/blog/) though the release date is still uncertain. Not just a musician, Zoe also works with organizations local to her in New Orleans - one is a reentry project for women that is run by formerly incarcerated women. Her desire to humanize our fellow citizens and work towards a new kind of justice styles her as an integral ally here at Give a Beat.
