Before superstar DJs took over the spotlight, dance music was a cultural phenomenon that really brought people together. Mr. V’s DJ sets take dancers and listeners back to this time for a genuine feel of dance music’s early, nostalgic days. The music was built heavily on traditional song structures with lots of heart and soul. It is with this classic spirit and sheer enthusiasm that New York City’s Mr. V engages the dance music world today.
Mr. V grew up in the 1980s and was heavily influenced by house, hip hop, Latin music, garage and disco classics, rhythm and blues, and jazz. He became enamored by how a DJ commanded a crowd.
Mr. V met Louie Vega and discovered a deeper taste for house music from the soulful sounds he heard at Vega’s Underground Network party. Vega saw the drive and potential in Mr. V and hired the young Nuyorican DJ and producer as his assistant at the world famous Masters At Work label. There, Mr. V got a rare glimpse into the global dance scene and before long, he was taking up the decks alongside his mentor.
Currently, Mr. V is one of the most recognizable names on the circuit. In addition to his busy DJ schedule, he has also made a name for himself as a producer, remixer, and artist, releasing music on Vega Records, Play It Down, Strictly Rhythm, Defected Records, and many more. Mr. V has his own label Sole Channel Music, along with then-partner Alix Alvarez, as a way to release music with complete control and artistic freedom.
In addition to his music, Mr. V gives back by raising awareness around social issues. He’s been a great supporter of Give a Beat.
[Why support Give a Beat?] “Because we all should help the world and give back when needed.”
